Principal’s Reflection
In today’s world there is much scrutiny on leading and leaders. Newspapers, television, and other online feeds, regularly report on our political leaders for example. As a democracy, we are very aware that we vote for who will lead our country, our state, and our local community. We also hold those leaders accountable and place them and their leadership style under close scrutiny.
Last Thursday we gathered together as a community to acknowledge our student leaders, however, in doing so, it made sense to consider what is meant by leadership. In accepting their badges, it was important that our Year 12s gave thought about the leader that they aspire to be.
Leadership over the years has had many styles. Not all have stood the test of time, with some styles questioned today.
I asked this question: Is the image of the general, sitting on his horse, with his sword drawn leading the charge into enemy territory, the best approach to leadership? It is all very dynamic and exciting and makes for good footage in a movie but straight away I can see a problem in real life. As the general charges ahead, can he be sure that anyone is following him?
When I was growing up, we had a beautiful clock in our lounge room. These show-pieces of the home were diminished over time. Most people now look at their phones to tell time.
I thought that the workings of a clock could give our senior students a lesson about leadership.
If you open a clock, you will see that it works as a result of many intricate pieces all functioning together. Some of the pieces are larger and more powerful than others. However, if one of the smaller less obvious pieces of the clock stops working, the whole system ceases. Regardless of the workmanship in constructing the clock, regardless of how efficient it is, or was, in keeping accurate time, if one piece misfires, then nothing works.
And so, we have metaphors for effective leadership within a community. Rather than being a system where individuals charge ahead on the assumption that everyone will happily follow, leadership is much more intricate. Being aware, no matter how much of a contribution you or your personality could make to something, a good leader must never lose sight of the fact that he or she is part of a system. And that system will only function if all the parts are working together harmoniously.
This is the challenge that awaits our new Year 12 leaders, but also our entire Year 12 cohort and all the cohorts at Shalom from Year 11 down to Year 7. I highlighted that they could be a strong leader if they are articulate, intelligent, and committed. However, they could only be an effective leader if they were able to ensure that all the components of their organization, no matter how big, how small, or seemingly inconsequential, were polished, functional, and moving in unison.
To those who received badges on Thursday, congratulations. I asked them to spare a thought for the many generals who never made it past the first cavalry charge and the beautiful and the ornate grandfather clocks that whirred and ticked away, largely unnoticed in the corner of the lounge room, but with all its parts happily working together.
That I believe is the essence of leadership.
A Leader’s Prayer
Leadership is hard to define.
Lord, let us be the ones to define it with justice.
Leadership is like a handful of water.
Lord, let us be the people to share it with those who thirst.
Leadership is not about watching and correcting.
Lord, let us remember it is about listening and connecting.
Leadership is not about telling people what to do.
Lord, let us find out what people want.
Leadership is less about the love of power
and more about the power of love.
Lord, as we continue to undertake the role of leader let us be
affirmed by the servant leadership we witness in your son Jesus. Let
us walk the path He has set and let those who will, follow.
Let our greatest passion be compassion.
Our greatest strength love.
Our greatest victory the reward of peace.
In leading let us never fail to follow.
In loving let us never fail.
Amen

CSPA 2022 Parent Survey on Student Wellbeing and Learning
The information below is an extract from a circular from Leesa Jeffcoat Diocesan Director.
The Australian government has asked CSPA to enter into an agreement to inform them of existing and emerging issues that are of concern to Catholic school families, especially those issues that impact their children’s health, wellbeing and/or learning. In particular, they are keen to hear the perspectives of parents and carers from families of children with challenges around learning, and from families with children in remote school settings. As a result, CSPA, in partnership with the Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth (ARACY), have developed a parent survey which will be the key instrument for evidence gathering.
Included in this newsletter is the flyer with the link in which to fill out the survey questions.
A reminder that the due date is 31 August.

Mission
Shalom Day 18 August
All going well we will hold Shalom Day on the 18 August. This year we will have our Shalom Day Liturgy, Shalom’s Got Talent and, best of all, our Inter-house Dance Competition.
Shalom Day is a free dress day where students are allowed to wear casual clothes. Please ensure your child does not wear singlet or crop tops, short shorts or ripped jeans. They need to wear closed in shoes due to safety regulations. They will require a hat but it does not have to be a school hat – caps are fine. We will collect a gold coin donation for their House charity.
We also ask that students do not bring school bags. They will not require books or laptops/iPads so a small bag that can be carried by student for the day containing lunch, hat, water bottle, sunscreen etc. The tuckshop will be open as per usual.
Reflection Days for Year 10 and Year 8
We have 2 very good presenters coming to Shalom, Katie and David Kobler. They will address some very real issues for young people. Year 10 will have their sessions on 29 August and these will take the entire day. Year 8 will have their session on 30 August in Periods 1 and 2
This is what they are covering for Year 10 …
- Ingredients for a healthy relationships
- Sexual decision making
- Consent
- And other age appropriate issues
This is what they are covering for Year 8 …
- How to find, build and navigate meaningful relationships
- Where toxic versions of masculinity and femininity are rife, ways to formulate a healthy understanding of their own gender and identity.
I am sure you agree these are very important topics for young people to engage with. If you have a child in these year levels, please ensure they are in attendance on these days. If you require any additional information, please contact me.
Year 12 Retreat Day
Year 12 will have a one day Retreat on 26 August. Mr Michael Fitzpatrick will run this day – he ran their Year 11 Retreat. They will spend the day together here at school in the Sports Centre. This will be a lovely way to spend one of their final school days.
Year 12 students will be allowed to wear free dress on this day and their lunch will be supplied. The retreat will run in school time from 8:30am until 3pm.

Rosa Awards
The ROSA (Recognition of Student Application) program is an award program which recognises student application to their studies. We value the importance of acknowledging students who are motivated, show perseverance and work diligently to reach their potential. The ‘goal posts’ for all our students are different, however all students are capable of achieving their own success targets. There are many ways we regularly encourage and reward the efforts of our students. The ROSA award allows for more of our students to be recognised amongst their peers.

From the Library
Chess is popular at Shalom, many of the students play in both the junior and senior libraries during their break times and chess club meets every Tuesday for the entire lunch period in the Bee2 breakout room in Beerarlem. During this time, we are fortunate to have our resident chess ‘master’ present to impart his knowledge onto his eager protegees.
Our facilities staff have kindly created a large chess board outside the Beerarlem library to accommodate the large chess pieces that had so far ostensibly been dusty ornaments. These can be put out every morning for the day, weather permitting.
I would hope that all students practice good sportsmanship and behaviour and not spoil the fun for others.
“The game of chess is not merely an idle amusement. Several very valuable qualities of the mind, useful in the course of human life, are to be acquired or strengthened by it… Life is a kind of Chess, in which we have often points to gain, and competitors or adversaries to contend with.” – Benjamin Franklin

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers
At the start of each school year we ask parents to indicate their availability for volunteering in the College tuckshop.
Life is busy and forever changing, so for this reason we have set up a booking system that will not only accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and who may have a day here or there throughout the year to come along and lend a hand and support our students. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 41 55 8111.
For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2 to 3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).
No experience required!
